Asian Development Bank will lend to Tajikistan about $ 140 million over three years. These funds will be allocated for energy projects implementation. According to ADB funding will be assigned for next three years - 2014-2016.
Funds of the energy sector development project (renamed to the enhancement of measurement and transmission project) by the end of 2014 are $ 39 million.
Financing of this sector is also expected in the years 2015-2016 by ADB. Most of these funds are allocated on a grant basis.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources country energy strategy for the period up to 2020 envisages an increase in production capacity and transfer of energy to address the current lack of electricity and increase exports.
The strategy envisages improving energy security, financial performance in the energy sector, the expansion of regional trade electricity on a commercial basis and increasing tariffs to cover costs.
According to the state owned Energy Company "Barki Tojik" electricity shortage in the autumn- winter period is about 2 billion kW, however, experts tend to believe that actually this figure is bigger at least twice. Confirmation of that is a hard limit on the power supply of the rural population from October to May each year.
